We Remember Victory in Europe Day (VE-Day), 1945
Pictured here is the colorful unofficial 371st Fighter Group emblem, a fox in a top hat standing confidently with a bomb to blast an enemy and a broom to sweep the pieces away. The group’s radio callsign was “Van Dyke.” There was another unofficial caricature in the group of a generic Airman named “Frisky” who found himself in cartoons in comedic situations around the group. It appears the name Frisky was given to the Fox too and became a moniker for the 371st Fighter Group. A big sign bearing the Fox with the name Frisky beneath it was displayed prominently at one airfield, perhaps outside group headquarters. And the group’s baseball team was named the “Frisky Foxes” – they won the XIX TAC baseball championship in July, 1945. (The Story of the 371st Fighter Group in the E.T.O.)
