Day of Infamy, December 7, 1941
Republic P-43A Lancer nose-over in the sod at Portland AAB, 19 January 1942. Note the visual characteristics of the P-43 which would be carried forth into the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt design, as seen in the shape of the wings and the “razorback” style canopy and angled shape of the windscreen. The “55P” on the tail indicates assignment to the 55th Pursuit Group, and the aircraft serial number is carried immediately below.
