The Birth Pangs of Portland Air Base – Part IV: First Air Defense Exercise in 1941

Among the many aircraft which came to Portland to participate in the air defense maneuvers in late October, 1941 were some Lockheed YP-38 fighters, early versions of the P-38 Lightning fighter. The first of 13 of these pre-production test planes came off Lockheed’s production line in September, 1940 and was delivered to the USAAF in the spring of 1941. (142nd Wing History Archive)
